A really good free one that's super light on system resources is panda free cloud antivirus.

I have used Panda sometime back and found it very interrupting and heavy on system. I like AVG for it fits the bracket with performance and virus control issues.

Does that mean AVG proved a heavy program on your system? I can only accept that it makes internet use slow a bit for it's link scanner function. Regarding it was impossible to handle. It's a very heavy anti virus program that scans each and every minute activity of your computer. I have used it some time back i.e. a year or two. It is also a possibility that it might have evolved since than.
