If you don't have too many new registrations you can vett people by allowing them to provide proof that they are real by:
Giving a real name
Giving the name of their facebook page or blog
Articles they've written
etc. If they're interested.
It doesn't always work for people to do that though. I have a couple of fans of my blog that remain anonymous because they don't want to be searched, which might lead to trouble getting jobs or keeping the one they have because they're considered to be psychic fruit loops.

Nothing wrong with anonymity on a public forum. Just preventing links for new members will eliminate the vast majority of spammers.

We have picked up some new 'lurker' members in the past two weeks. Welcome to the SCEPCOP forums.

We have broken our old record: Most users ever online was 69 on Sat Nov 26, 2011 4:20 am. Considering the date and time, it must be some sort of glitch.

We don't usually get many of the Baidu spiders at one time and right now we have a ton of 'real people' lurkers here. The numbers tend to go up when we get someone with personal experiences with the JREF Million Dollar Challenge or whatever it's properly called. I can't say why, but that's what happens.
