How is it that animals that mate for life fit into this theory? There's a rather extensive example of this throughout nature and within most every species with primates being one of the most typical (though you will find that most mammals tend to have a more "service oriented" brood -- one male to several females). Biblically, we can see how the "wife" or "help mate" was "property" of the man (as were all female offspring); frequently used in affairs of social positioning (politics and business ventures in times leading into the current era); we can still see aspects of this mentality in some of the more "traditional" 3rd world environs. But this is strictly a human choice of practice and yes, it is tainted in similar ways as this theory of yours Winston, but we're looking at exceptions to the generally accepted rule.
Anytime a relationship takes on the feeling of servitude one needs to wake-up and either seek some intense counseling or simply leave that situation; it is not healthy nor productive on any level. But relationships that are based on mutual attraction, respect and appreciation for one another, how dare anyone categorize them as slavery or something sinister. In my book that's just plain lashing out over personal failure and loss and I'm certain other Psych students would see the same thing.
"The Man" or whatever mythical secret fraternity that's out there pulling all the strings, would rather humankind be content. This keeps us more susceptible to the various "requests" they impose on us... or so logic would suggest.
Has the corporate world become abusive?
Most Certainly! Especially with those that work median level jobs that keep them in a state of "existence' from payday to payday; this is exactly why the current economic downturn has devastated so much of our urban culture. But the "Slavery" element has little to do with such things and a lot to do with our belief that we must keep up with the Jones'... especially when the Jones' are more financially liquid than we are.
The whole "Bling" and "Gadget" culture invented by advertisers and marketing strategists was a deliberate thing that appealed to man's lower nature -- greed and the illusion of being more than he is. The result was a building boom of the faux mini-mansions, the faux "need" for cell phone systems that do everything but have sex with you and worse, they create a very deliberate segregation of humanity...
... thanks to tex-messages, eMail, chat rooms, Tweets, etc. fewer human beings are placed in the position to interact with other living & breathing entities that have a degree of intellect. Plus, this electronic environment allows us to nonchalantly tell the world everything about us, allowing our most intimate of thoughts and cruel of fantasies to become known... and yes, Big Brother IS watching under the banner of National Security and Terrorist Watch amongst other things like how to target you on specific products, issues, et al. So this is where the "slavery" comes into play and the thing is, we volunteered and willingly put ourselves into this position because we think we need all that stuff.
Sadly, the media has taught young girls (particularly) that they are princesses and if someone really loves them they will go hungry and work 80+ hours a week so we can have those designer label purses, eye glasses, and outfits complete with yappy purse mutt. But the lad being so manipulated has the obligation to find his testicles and tell the spoiled bitch to go get a job to support her own outrageous expectations. At the same time, both individuals should have the savvy and self-respect to TURN OFF THE BLOODY TV when such outrageous idiocy is being promoted in a show/film or even commercials.
While we must admit our limitations, we must be willing to push past them; especially when our imagination attempts to hold the reigns and force us to travel down a more fantasiful path that mimics the essence of the Tarot's Fool and the roads before him -- filed with the opportunity of life and light as well as potential gloom and despair... the choice is ours NOT our inner-ego.Statistics: Posted by Craig Browning — 08 Oct 2010, 00:53
