That's interesting. What about the claim of psychiatrists that excess of one chemical (I forget the name of it) has been linked to mental illness?

I used to have severe OCD and some other disorder that doesn't even exist in the DSM manual. After I recovered from it, my mental and spiritual states were elevated. I was smarter, able to think and write well, and became more articulate in my communication skills. It was like my power of insight and communication were greatly heightened to new levels.

So I theorized that perhaps mental disorders were a form of mental or spiritual growth where the physical brain is unable to cope and therefore malfunctions for a while before adjusting

Other testimonials at http://www.successfulschizophrenia.com (a site against the establishment view of schizophrenia) have told similar tales of heightened abilities after recovering from schizophrenia.

Of course, not all cases go like this. But it's something to consider.

It caught my attention because I have asked Buddhist teachers and monks before about whether meditation can be used to treat mental illness, but they had no answer to that question, as if no one had ever thought of that issue before. Sheesh. It was like no one would address it. I'm glad this person on YouTube did. She sounds very sincere and I'm glad she has an active blog and is writing a book about it.

For myself, I have tried just about everything under the sun along the lines of meditation, lucid dreaming, many breath works techniques, body work, tarot cards, you name it. I have received varying degrees of benefit from all of this work. However, I still have 'problems' that none of these approaches could handle. If I take the right meds the quality of my life is greatly enhanced. Without them I would not choose to live very long due to a complete absence of quality and only pain.

But that's just me. If you can possibly avoid psych meds I strongly recommend you do so. They are powerful chemicals and there is always a downside to every drug you take.
