Astronomers are discovering more and more planets in our galaxy that could conceivable support life. There may be billions of them. So it is not a stretch to think that some of them have life, and some may have advanced life (perhaps more or less advanced than us). But there's still a real distance problem - they are very far away.

I also don't know why there would necessarily be widespread panic if they announced themselves. If they have in fact been here for a lon time there may be reason to believe that they are not hostile.

I also wonder how they manage to survive on this planet so well once they come. In War of the Worlds the armies didn't defeat the aliens - viruses did. There is little reason to believe they would be immune to our viruses and would likely have to take precautions such as masks. This would also make it less easy to remain inconspicuous.

I got the sense that Misha was saying that these aliens are in contact with our world leaders and have been working with them.

We'd also have much to fear from any viruses that they brought with them. But they won't necessarily mean us harm. There are plenty of resource rich planets out there to mine - and if they are planning on using humans as a work-force they seem to be taking their time doing it - why let us waste all the resources? And how efficient would it be to mine us for resources? They still have to get it back to their planet. And they'd still have to not kill us or themselves by viruses. As for living here - you'd think there'd be planets closer to where they are from that would be more convenient to habitate. So I don't know that' its a given that they'd be hostile.

Sure, but there's not much to discuss if you're not going to say anything more about what your information is.

Again: I have no conceptual problem with the idea of aliens visiting our planet. But there are some very practical problems that I haven't really heard any plausible possible resolutions to to make it seem likely that it has actually happened.

The first issue that needs to be overcome is the distance issue. What plausible travel methods are they using?
