Bad Astronomer - Bad Universe Swift Written by D.J. Grothe Friday, 23 July 2010 10:40
Unless you are new to the JREF, you know who Phil Plait is. Blogger, skeptic celebrity, and past-president of the JREF, he left the JREF last year to pursue a secret television project, even as he remains connected to our efforts, having recently spoken at TAM8 and serving on our advisory committee. Everyone at the JREF is very excited to announce that his new TV show is appearing soon on the Discovery Channel. Called Bad Universe, his new program will promote skepticism about pseudoscience and offer scientific explanations of the mysteries of the universe, in addition to giving Phil's popular take on topics in astronomy. Congratulations, Phil -- it is high time that your work gains an even wider audience.

So you're saying it's a new Tv Evangelist Service, but for atheists and scoffers, eh?

I just read up a bit on this guy, and what a total goof; Same tired nonsense from the Fundamental Materialists. Almost every single thing he says is either a logical fallacy, or completely anti-science. Here's a perfect example, on astrology: There is no force, known or unknown, that could possibly affect us here on Earth What? So he's magically aware of every property of some theoretical unknown force which may not even exist? Phil Plait is a clown.

Do you have some sort of horrible mental defect, because you sure don't try to hide it.

You do know- on second thought I see that you probably don't know ad hominem attacks are used by people that can't find any other well reasoned argument against someones position on a subject. They are the weakest platform from which to make your own point. Interjecting mysterious unknown forces accomplishes nothing either as it explains nothing.

So, in other words, the answer is yes, is that what you're saying? You stated no position, so I had no reason to make any argument. Quite ironically, I stated a position, gave a good example as to why I held my position, and you posted an Ad Hominem. I really hope, for your sake, that you aren't being serious and that you're just trolling. really? wrote:Interjecting mysterious unknown forces accomplishes nothing either as it explains nothing.
Reading comprehension. I didn't interject any mysterious unknown force, Phil Plait did. And I was mocking him for his ridiculous statement.

I believe I need to remind you of two things- 1. You are not on a skeptic forum. 2. This can be taken as name calling and you can be banned for that.

May I ask what you find incorrect about his statement? May I also ask where you found it to see if there is something left out that may explain his statement? I did find a similar quote of his which I find quite accurate. If you don't find it as accurate as I do, please help me understand your point: "...Remember, and I keep repeating this because it's important-- this is playing by the astrologers' own rules. Either there is a known force, and we can show it doesn't work for astrology, or it's some unknown force that doesn't obey the laws of physics, in which case asteroids and extrasolar planets would dominate astrology, washing out the effects from our own solar system planets. So it can't be a known or unknown force. That leaves nothing. Astrology doesn't work." http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/misc/astrology.html

You stated Phil doesn't know everything so thereby leaving open the door for unseen forces to explain the mechanization's of astrology even though you've said such forces may not exist.

Um, do you really have to ask? That he thinks he is somehow magically aware of every property of some theoretical unknown force which may not even exist. I'm pretty sure I typed that already, but glad to clear it up. ProfWag wrote: May I also ask where you found it to see if there is something left out that may explain his statement?
It's on the same page you posted, at the bottom under the heading of Summing Up. And what could conceivably have been left out which would make that statement any less unscientific? Maybe if he prefaced it, "I would be a total moron if I said that there is no force, known or unknown, that could possibly affect us here on Earth." He didn't. ProfWag wrote:I did find a similar quote of his which I find quite accurate. That's not even close to accurate. He cannot comment on the properties of some theoretical unknown force and pretend that it's a scientific argument. Well, he can, and he did, but it will always be unscientific. He then goes on to pseudoscientifically speculate that this unknown force doesn't obey the laws of physics, and immediately ascribes it physical rules - based on absolutely nothing, of course.

Reading comprehension, again. I didn't say anything even remotely close to that. Plait brought up this unknown: There is no force, known or unknown, that could possibly affect us here on Earth
Is this really that difficult? He claims to know all the properties of some unknown force, and that's completely ridiculous. It's dictionary definition pseudoscience.
