From http://www.infozine.com/news/stories/op/storiesView/sid/40071/FDA has issued a warning not to use ear candles, even when used according to the manufacturer’s directions.
FDA has found no valid scientific evidence to support the safety or effectiveness of these devices for any medical claims or benefits. FDA has received reports of burns, perforated eardrums and blockage of the ear canal which required outpatient surgery from the use of ear candles.
FDA is especially concerned because some ear candles are being advertised for use in children.

Meh, that's old news. My dad used to do this all the time. I personally thought that sticking anything with a flame on it in my ear was not good policy.

Shoot. I'm slipping. I knew ear candling was not new. I thought the FDA statement was new. Oh, boy. Back to looking for other new items.

The article isn't that new either. I recall reading it last week somewhere.

Just did a search on google. It is all over the net. I pity the person who uses ear candles as part of her job and the procedure goes wrong.

There are too much misconception about ear candles. I love ear candles they are gently and soothing.
Ear Candles are a natural and holistic modality that has been used from generation to generation. They are safe and relaxing.
· Ear candles do NOT remove wax from the body
· Ear candles are NOT a medical device
Ear Candles are a natural, holistic modality that has been passed down from generation to generation. This relaxing modality helps the body to heal itself of ear aches, sinus congestion, migraines and more. As the body relaxes it reaches homeostasis. Alternative modalities simply allow the body to do what the human body normally does, and that is to find balance in wellness, especially with the integration of mind-body-spirit. This, in essence, is what homeostasis is. If you have time, read how it actually works for yourself at: Link removed by Moderator

You post 2 statements about 2 "rates" yet the rates are not comparable. You provided no units of measure for you rate. Could you do that please?

The link provided for ear candling appears to be a string of conflicting statements such as: to reveal how ear candles TRULY work.
few scientific studies to validate
have been documented
Either you have documentation or you don't. I suspect that there is no Dr Harmony and there there is no proof and that ear candling is simply a means for your company to gather income. Another issue that seems like a problem is that you claim a ban which is NOT what is happening. Any comments or is this a 1 post wonder?

Actually I thought it was you playing a joke. With all of the possible things that someone could choose to object to around here, who thought it would be your ear candle article?

FDA orders 15 companies to stop marketing ear candles. The FDA has notified 15 companies that ear candles are unapproved medical devices that cannot be legally marketed in interstate commerce. The recipients were King Cone International; Indian Mountain Center; Bobalee Originals Manufacturing; International Ear Candle, LLC; Home Remedies Solutions; Harmony Cone; A..J.'s Candles Inc; Wholistic Health Solutions; Wally's Natural Products Inc.; Body Tools; Health, Wealth, & Happiness; White Egret, Inc.; Brennan & McCoy; Amasha; Unisource; and Herbs, Heirlooms and Homebrew. Some had promoted the products for use in children as well as adults. "Ear candling," also known as coning, refers to various procedures that involve placing a cone-shaped device in the ear canal and supposedly extracting earwax and other impurities with the help of smoke or a burning wick. The procedures supposedly create a low-level vacuum that draws wax and other debris out of the ear canal. Studies have demonstrated that candles do not remove ear wax but may leave leave candle wax in the canal. Burns and blockage of the canal have been reported. [Roazen L. Why ear candling is not a good idea. Quackwatch May 12, 2010] Despite government actions, ear candles are still widely available through the Internet and at health-food stores.
So much for ear candles.

A simple Google search indicates otherwise. Ask.com wrote:Proponents of ear candling claim that this creates a low-level vacuum that draws ear wax and other debris out of the ear and into the hollow candle. After the procedure, a dark, waxy substance is usually left in the stub of the candle.
WebMD wrote:Ear candling is an ancient practice that supposedly removes wax from the ears, thereby improving physical and spiritual well-being.

Evidence? If you can't link to it, quote it. We need your help! Please sign the petition and ask them to stop this madness. Actually, stroke is the third largest killer. Google the article, "Heart Disease Still America's No. 1 Killer, Stroke No. 3." I have to agree with you on that last point, though. It's ludicrous to have to spend tax-payer dollars on a ban to keep people from putting flaming pillars of hot wax in their ears.
What's the harm?

A simple Google search leads to all sorts of rubbish doesn't it?
