'Psychic' computer invented that can tell what you're thinki

Postby Nostradamus » 12 Mar 2010, 04:13

From http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1257174/Psychic-invented-tell-youre-thinking.html?ITO=1490
That's the headline. I don't agree with, but it is what the newspaper stated.

It got it right 45 per cent of the time - significantly more often than would be expected from chance alone, the journal Current Biology reports.

The following claim seems to be stretching things just a bit, but it interesting in that it shows the direction being taken by the research.
She said that the work meant that we are 'approaching the realm of mind-reading'.

The professor said: 'In our previous experiment, we were looking at basic memories, at someone's location in an environment.

'What is more interesting is to look at "episodic" memories - the complex, everyday memories that include much more information on where we are, what we are doing and how we feel.'

For the non-techies here is an ethical dilemma to consider.
Researcher Dr Jack Gallant warned at the time: 'It is possible that decoding brain activity could have serious ethical and privacy implications in 30 to 50 years.

'We believe strongly that no one should be subjected to any form of brain-reading involuntarily, covertly, or without informed consent.'

Another report on the same thought reading program at:
http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/03/11/scientists-perfect-mind-reading/

These kinds of memories are episodic memories — "the complex, everyday memories that include much more information on where we are, what we are doing and how we feel," said researcher Eleanor Maguire, a cognitive neuroscientist at University College London.

"It would be extremely interesting to consider what would happen if we brought them back the next day or in a week's time or in a month's time or even a year's time," Maguire noted. "Does the memory trace degrade, does it change over time, do other brain areas assume responsibility for the memories? It also leads into future research looking at the effect of perhaps age in general on memories and perhaps how memories are affected by brain injury and disease."

From http://www.geek.com/articles/gadgets/12000-mind-reading-intendix-computer-will-type-your-thoughts-for-you-20100310/
$12,000 mind-reading Intendix computer will type your thoughts for you

The Intendix is hardly the first Brain-Computer Interface (or BCI) to come along, and it works similarly to the rest, measuring EEG output as input data. However, it is the most consumer friendly, costing just $12,000, which is pretty cheap for this kind of technology.

What did James Randi say about Uri Geller .. If he's using his mind to bend spoons, he's doing it the hard way?

"The computer had a high success rate in telling which of three short films the subjects were thinking about."

"The machine recorded a 45 per cent success rate - significantly higher than would have been expected through chance alone"

Let's see .. the computer was programmed to look for recurring patterns in subjects who were attempting to recall specific scenes, and then, guess which 1 of 3 recurring patterns it recognized, which it did with a success rate of 12% above chance. Gosh, almost like mind reading .. except the computer doesn't know what was in the subject's mind .. it was just looking for recurring electrical patterns and guessing.

It looks like it would make a perfect replacement for The Clapper (Clap on! Clap off! The clapper!). But the person will have to wear a wire bathing cap.

You claim that it is a guess is wrong. Continuing to show your lack of understand is a wee tiresome.

When it gets to be 100% accurate, then you can say it's not guessing. 12% above random is what we call an educated guess.

Too bad you don't understand what is done in these tests. Maybe someday you will understand science.

Ok, so let a science blog explain it.

http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/80bea ... your-mind/

"While that’s impressive, it’s not foolproof “mind-reading”—yet. The computer program was not good enough to predict which film a person was thinking about every time. With three films to choose from, a blind guess would be right 33% of the time on average. The computer predicted the right film 40-45% of the time. Also, Maguire says, they can’t be sure what they’re looking at in these brain patterns from their small sample—whether the people are remembering the setting of the movie, the action, or something else."

so .. um .. yeah .. they have no idea what's happening. It's guesswork. And it isn't mind reading at all, just brainwave tricks.

Nostradamus, your science and reading comprehension suck. This is like the third time you've been wrong about something.
