Try it out for awhile. Request feedback then make a decision.

The blue one is worth trying, I agree,

Does it cost you anything to upgrade to the newest version of the software? That would also make things better and help retain members.

No, all phpbb upgrades are free. However, I've installed mods on this forum and there is always a risk that upgrades may cause incompatibilities or cause a theme not to work anymore. So I'm cautious about it. Upgrades tend to fix only little things that aren't noticeable anyway. So I'm wary of them, especially since the forum is working fine. Like they say "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". lol

What would an upgrade offer in this forum that it doesn't currently have?

There are a number of features that most other forums have that aren't available here: such as being able to click on a person's name and see all their posts, or pm them, or threads they've started. You're a member of the skeptiko fiorum, play around there and you'll see the features I'm talking about.

This software seems pretty out of date in comparison.

Agreed, for the same reasons... phpbb has gotten a lot more advanced over time -- unless those features are available in this version and just haven't been turned on for some reason. I'm on a number of other phpbb forums which are functionally richer and more useful. I'm also on a few other 'quasi-forums' with pretty crap and rudimentary features, with everything from the limited 'comments' engine in wordpress to some pretty crappy wikis etc -- there's a lot of competing products out there doing slightly different things, phpbb seems pretty good, altho you have to pay.

the blue is OK. phpbb also has a user-switchable skins capability, I believe, users can choose their own up to a point.

You can click on the link to each member's profile in their posts and get that info too. You aren't making much sense. We have everything we need here.

Which features do you mean? Can you give me some examples? I don't see any difference in the Skeptiko forum or features there that this forum doesn't have.

Do you mean that ability to log in with Facebook? I looked into that and it's very complicated to install.

We seem to have everything we need don't we? Can you be more specific about what's missing?

hyperlinks on posters' names and profiles, and a drop down menu on their names that lets you look at their content, or your own content, etc, send a PM, and what have you. probably nothing that exciting except the ability to click through to a profile if anyone has bothered to fill one out. now i think of it, i've been on hostile forums where people fill out no personal details at all and deliberately keep as anonymous as possible.

I told you. We already have that. Next to each post, there is a PM button to PM the poster. Their profile link also brings up their profile where you can search their posts. These features already existed in phpbb1 long ago. They are nothing new.

Scepcop - take the advice or reject it, but it is much easier to do certain things on other forums, and some things this forum doesn't support at all.

Wouldn't you expect that newer versions of the software have made updates and improvements? The reality is that as much as I have fun here, the actual technical browsing experience is much worse here. Even the fact that when you quote someone it copies your original quote as well. I keep on erasing it because it just makes things cluttered.

Like what? You aren't being specific. I have nothing to go on if you don't specify. And neither would a computer.

What does the skeptiko forum have that we don't?

As far as I've seen, newer versions of phpbb only fix bugs and patches, which I have not seen make any noticeable difference. Only programming geeks notice any difference.

Remember the axiom "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

If you want a certain mod or feature, let me know what it is. Otherwise, you are just trying to be a butthead for no reason.

Ok I just looked at the Skeptiko forum at: http://forum.mind-energy.net/

The only thing it has that we don't are:

1. A latest topics box on the index page.
2. The last topic viewable next to each board section.

We can install those too, but what's the point of showing the last topic in each board? It's not like the last topic is more important than the other topics in that board. I don't see the point of that. Showing one topic per board just seems to take up more space on the index page for no reason. Do you all really want that?

If not, what do you want? I want to try to help, but you need to be more specific. You can PM anyone here by clicking the PM button next to their post. We've always had that feature. So to claim that we don't is technically false. I'm trying to work with you here, but I can't if you aren't making technically accurate statements.

The forum is back to normal now.

Here is another great bluish theme:

https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/styl ... ance/demo/

However, even though these blue/white themes are nice, they just seem kind of dull and bland compared to this spicey red theme don't you think? :)

On skeptiko, try right clicking on the name of a poster - see the drop down menu with all the options. Also, go to their user page and you can also easily do things like see their last 225 posts, see any threads they started, send a PM, see when they last logged on, leave a message on their page, add them to your friend list to make PMing easier.

When you quote someone, the post they are quoting doesn't get quoted - so you can just respond to their most recent post and its clear.

Searching is a lot easier as well.

Also you can subscribe to threads

I think you can customize how you view threads much more easily as well.

I'm sure there's stuff that I'm forgetting.

They have done more than cosmetic changes and bug fixes.

Honestly, Scepcop, I'm not trying to be a jerk. I think if you want to have a popular forum people will be more likely to stay if the site is as up to date as other sites they are on.

I can do almost all of that with my mad skillz.
