The Scientific Evidence for Psychic Ability

Postby craig weiler » 04 Sep 2011, 05:06

I've seen a few forum posts here that question the viability of the scientific evidence for the existence of psychic ability.

Most people have no idea what that evidence is, so I'm sharing a couple of my blog posts that deal with this subject:

http://weilerpsiblog.wordpress.com/evidence-for-psi/

(I would have preferred to cut and paste it into this post, but the charts get all screwed up. It's easier to read on my blog anyway.)

You can basically trace almost all skeptical studies back to CSICOP, and their track record leaves a lot to be desired:

The evidence for psychic ability meets any sane scientific standard.

As a skeptic and a critquer, I agree with your conclusion about the scientific evidence for psi phenomena; however, I am yet to look for evidence of life after death, reincarnation, mediumship, astrology etc...

The best evidence for mediumship is Gary Schwarz's The Afterlife Experiments. It's a good book available from the library.

Do remember that CSICOP is the group that got caught red-handed changing stats on one of their tests (I believe it was on Astrology. . . I so wish I had a copy of that article :| ) like Randi/JREF/MDC very little of it is ever true "scientific standard" that's not bias free. I have the funny feeling you understand how research stats can be toyed with; toss in linguistics, the refusal to allow certain data into the scenario and voila! You can prove the earth is a cube and the Republican Party are humanitarians.

Ok Craig, you're on my list!

Profwag, not certain what you meant by that outside of impatience in my not giving a link sooner. But as I've said, bears don't fetch (I really do need to change my avatar to a Bear @ a Typewriter :? )

I assume by your comment "I am yet to look for evidence of life after death, reincarnation", you simply mean you haven't investigated those things yet. Of the fields of paranormal research, those two have been covered by such massive amounts of verifiable evidence over the last 150 years I can't understand why at this date in time it isn't known by everyone and that all denial has been eliminated. At some point I'm going to have to gather a bunch of links to required viewing videos and post them to this forum. In the quote below, even atheist Carl Sagan couldn't deny the evidence.

"There are three claims in the ESP field which in my opinion, deserve serious study: (3) that young children sometimes report the details of a previous life, which upon checking turn out to be accurate and which they could not have known about in any other way than reincarnation." - Carl Sagan

I'm fairly sure Ice Ages just hasn't looked at it yet. You're right. There is a LOT of evidence.

Craig, you said: "I so wish I had a copy of that article" and I responded "I wish you did too!" Essentially you said you didn't have a copy of the article so it wasn't about patience, I was just wishing you did have a copy of that article so it could clear up some points one way or the other. Not a slam or anything...this time... ;-)

Carl Sagan wasn't saying he believe Stevenson's conclusions. But like a good skeptic, he said it merited further investigation. I don't have the book handy but I think you cut the quotation short.

The Stevenson stuff is just so hard to deal with. I've read some of it, and the stories tend to leave me with more questions than answers. I haven't read the books in detail and want to at some point, but don't know when I'll get to it. These are complex psychological issues. I thnk there should be more research. Unfortunately, from google searching, there doesn't seem to be much critical review of Stevenson's work. There's been some attempts at going back and meeting the people, but Stevenson doesn't seem to have gathered much attention outsdie the parapsychological community. Even from skeptics. There's a couple book reviews but not much else.

Yea, it's probably the best evidence, but...

...but...the evidence for mediumship presented by Dr. Schwartz as a result of all of his experiments is simply not very good. His experiments just weren't conducted with proper protocols and his results, in my opinion, are extremely skewed.
He was to embark on a new series of tests, this year I believe, and am waiting anxiously on these new results. Hopefully, he does them appropriately.

Ok. What are your objections to the testing? I was not at all convinced by Hyman. I found his critique bombastic and more importantly, Schwartz pointed out that it was riddled with errors. But this study was also unique, so there is definitely room for error.
