Allow me to share a bit of motherly wisdom that I picked up from another mom who had an autistic child. Since the term 'autistic' was new at the time, it was as if some new problem sprung up from no where one day and was looking like it was going to get worse. The cause was unknown then as it is now and we moms could only speculate as to what might have caused it. My term for this problem was the 'Twinkie Theory'. Too much crap being put in our food that didn't belong there.

The other mom had a more relaxed theory for autism that sure did make sense. She calmly explained that since the begining of time, you had plenty of stupid kids born every day. These kids just had their own brand of stupid...hence the label - autistic.

It may sound very un-PC to most but if you have a child with autism, you can see the wisdom in that statement and you stop driving yourself crazy to look for a reason and you play the hand that was dealt to you and go on with life.

One of my son's friends has what is described as being somewhat autistic. The boy played soccer. The mom was incredibly diligent at giving her son the best chances at being a 'normal' boy. We were nicely told not to provide snacks to her son after games. She was careful about everything he ate. The entire family was on a special regimen so that there could be no mistakes about anything the boy ate. There was no his diet vs the diet of the others. There was special attention on the boy to focus on the game at all times. The dad was more easily frustrated about any lack of focus. I have a so-called normal kid and right in the middle of a game he changes into a transformer and allows the other team to run right by him and score.

What I saw at the games and practice was a boy that looked and acted like the other boys. From the parents I gathered that they had to constantly struggle to get to and maintain this state of so-called normalcy.

Autism and other diseases that are poorly understand simply show us how much there is to learn. There are no simple answers. Maybe someday there will be the dope slap to the head and a "can't believe this was discovered earlier" statement, but that is seeming more and more remote.

Had a birthday party recently and one of the little boys asked if there was any red dye in the ice cream cake. We made the cake from scratch, but were not able to know if there was red dye in the ingredients we used. So he had the bananas, carrots, and sugar snaps also served with the cake.

Friends of mine grow as much food as they can in their backyards. They purchase foods at the farmer's market in town. My favorite ingredient list is the one on power bars. My claim is that it's all pumped out of the ground by Shell or Exxon. As they say, "If you can't grow it, you have to mine it."

I was in Africa years ago, well besides being born there, and I was amazed at the general population's thoughts on AIDS. One common thought that was even in the newspapers was that AIDS was being spread by foreign governments through prophylactics. Another claim in the newspapers was that eating fish, in particular Nile perch, was spreading AIDS. These CTs were leading to the spread of the very disease they feared.
