I believe the problem comes down to a heapin' helpin' of analytical thinking vs. gee, that sounds good...let's run it up the ol' flagpole and see if it flies.

Arouet - It's like playing with your little army men but now you're the other side. Oh wait, does Canada even have those little army men? Let me try again... It's like playing with Star Wars figures but you're not Hans Solo anymore, you're Darth Vader.

But for this to be a useful exercise we need to first establish that we are correctly interpreting how the other side views things. I'm not sure that's been done here.

In this case it's how YOU interpret the other side. You're not out to change the world's view, just your own.

Why would I want to change my worldview to a strawman worldview? I won't really understand the other side, I'll just think I do.

I know I seem like I have a stick up my ass in this thread (maybe I always seem that way? :() but I think part of the problem is that people have a view of the other side that is incorrect, which leads to a lot of the conflict we see around here. That was the theme of my blog post I linked to in the US vs. Them thread.

IMO, no...not a stick up your ass. If you can't understand it, then obviously it's not being explained in the proper way. Or..... the exercise doesn't make sense from a time & energy vs. the outcome to you. Of course, unless your posts in this thread ARE your way of doing the exercise. Then you 'get it' and you're doing it very well. ;)

As usual, I see that it was one of my comments that bought this entire thread to a dead halt.

Well, the only other member showing any interest doesn't seem to be able to get out of the left side of his brain and understand that you only learn some things by doing. ;)
