Murder nabbed by his interest in the occult (and DNA)

Postby Nostradamus » 12 Mar 2010, 04:45

Been watching this story for a few days. Nothing much has happened, but here it is.

From http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/Arrest-made-in-investigation-of.6122077.jp
Arrest made in investigation of 1988 murder

The court heard Brown had been fascinated by the occult, tarot cards and numerology.

He had also been quizzed as part of the initial investigation, but it was not until advances in DNA technology that police were able to find vital evidence against him.

His DNA profile was on a piece of tissue paper recovered in 1988 on the attacker's escape route, and he was also linked by his interest in numerology to a Swan Vesta matchbox found at a derelict house nearby, which had his date of birth, the number of Mr Slater's house, and the date prior to the murder written on it.

Brown's interest in the occult was shared with his younger brother Patrick and their friend, Joe Henry.

Although there are claims that the court was "fascinated" there is little to show why or explain more than a matchbox with numbers on it.

Here is a little more info on how this guy got caught. There isn't any explanation as to why this guy was considered to have an "unhealthy interest" in paranormal issues. Maybe in time that information will come to light.

A man then responsible for keeping an eye on a derelict property nearby had found a box of matches there the same afternoon with numbers written on it.
One was the number 32 which was the house number in Bon Accord Road, Hessle where Mr Slater lived, another was the number 1821964, matching the date of Brown's birth on February 18, 1964 and the third, 2681988, was the date leading up to the stabbing.
Mr Collier said the matchbox was handed in on September 8 before Brown became a suspect and no one made any connection at the time.
After a Crimewatch appeal in 1988 Brown's landlord in Surrey, Barry Williams provided information to the police which suggested Brown, who was originally from Hull, and his brother Patrick "had an unhealthy interest" in the occult, tarot cards and numerology.
Mr Collier said an expert on religion and spiritualist matters would give evidence that the way the numbers were written on the matchbox were the way they were written by those interested in numerology recording dates.
There was also number four after the 18211964 date, which the expert said could indicate the auspiciousness of a date, while handwriting tests provided moderate support that the numbers were written by Brown.
