Documentary: The Hidden Story of Jesus

Part 1 of 11:

Description:

The Hidden Story of Jesus (2007)

As Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus, theologian Dr Robert Beckford investigates remarkable parallels to the Christ story in other faiths, some of them predating Christianity by thousands of years.

The Hindu god, Krishna, was conceived by a virgin and his birth was attended by angels, wise men and shepherds. Buddha was also the result of a miraculous birth, and was visited by wise men bearing gifts. He, too, began his ministry at about 30-years-old and performed such miracles as walking on water and feeding 500.

Some people in India believe that Jesus did not die on the cross but escaped from Roman Palestine and ended up in Kashmir. There, they say, he continued to preach, had a wife and child, and later died and was buried.

Jesus was, of course, born a Jew, and Christians believe he is the Messiah prophesied in the Torah, which is the holy scripture of the Jews. Meanwhile, Muslims revere Jesus as a prophet but do not believe he died on the cross. Instead, according to Islam, God saved him and took him up to heaven, and he will return and be buried next to Muhammed.

In this Channel 4 (UK) Christmas Day programme, Robert Beckford attempts to unravel the mystery of why there are so many versions of the Christ story across the world and asks which is the real one, and where this leaves the Christian story and his own belief in Jesus.
“Devotion to the truth is the hallmark of morality; there is no greater, nobler, more heroic form of devotion than the act of a man who assumes the responsibility of thinking.” - Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged

I have read these theories before. The Issa talked about in the Tibetan texts may or may not be Jesus. Or maybe the person commonly referred to as "Jesus" is really the combination of several men's life stories. I don't know. I'm not an expert at that period of history, and it's not an important enough issue for me to want to spend lots of time researching it.

I think this theory is possible, but not proven--and perhaps could never be totally proven.

Jackal, isn't your image that of Anubis, a psychopompos referrered to as a "Jesus Christ" (Greek for "holy Savior" used of Horus, Mithras, etc.?

Yes, I think it's a picture of Anubis. I just chose it because it's a cool pic and it goes with my screen name. That's as far as it goes. I don't particularly care about Anubis beyond thinking that Egyptian art is cool.

Thanx for the quick reply, Jackal. I spent thirty minutes trying to find an avatar today, and I nearly turned into the Pink Panther. Which would work, since I am known as Catsmeat in some quarters. ;) Peace

Osiris is the JC equivalent... Anubis is a guide of the soul... more akin to an Arch-Angel I'd say. When it comes to the JC parallels it will be Osiris in Egypt with Dionysus in Greece (and Rome for the most part) that get the golden nod.

I don't know where the combination of "Jesus + Christ" get the sort of translation you came up with Twain Shakespeare but I believe you're off a tad... Christ and/or Cristos (Christos) do mean (infer) "Anointed One" but even that doesn't mean "divine" as so many folks ASSUME... there have been anointed ones over the centuries but that does not mean that they were "enlightened" individuals but rather, one's set aside or honored or even "chosen" for a specific work; Gandhi was seen in this same light as with Mother Theresa... just not so much in the Westernized Mind.
