you seem to be suggesting that its better to believe in something that appears to be less shallow but shouldn't our beliefs be based on what we think is true, not just what we wish would be true - whether its shallow or not?

no, they tell suicide bombers etc that's what will be waiting for them. the suicide bombers are chosen as young, single males, no families, less to lose, and in that society an unmarried male isn't getting any. clearly to have your leader 'choose' you for a suicide bombing mission, they have to give you a worthwhile incentive, so a religious leader assures the young men that 70 virgins will be waiting for them in heaven, as they haven't had a chance to marry and get any on earth. with this 'belief' planted in their minds by a trusted imam (probably not dissimilar to a lot of beliefs held by Crusaders or soldiers in other times as a justification) they then muster up the courage to attempt the mission. we use concepts like 'national security' or 'honour' or 'duty' etc to get people to sacrifice their lives similarly.
