Debunking
the Arguments of Christian Fundamentalists and Apologists
The objective historical consensus view of Jesus
Most Christians assume that the Jesus described in the
Gospels is the official historical Jesus as well. What they don’t know is
that the majority of non-religious historical scholars who have done serious
extensive research into the matter do not see it that way at all.
Instead, the historians’ general consensus is that a historical Jesus probably
did exist, but that he was not the same one depicted in the Gospels, which are
mostly legend written down by anonymous authors to propagate a religious agenda. In fact, very little is known about the
historical Jesus, since there are no reliable historical records or documents
about him. And Jesus himself never wrote
anything down that survived today.
In fact, during an event known as the Jesus Seminar, hundreds of Bible scholars and historians met for a conference and further confirmed this view of Jesus. You can read about their research and findings at: http://religion.rutgers.edu/jseminar/jsem_b.html and also at http://www.jesusseminar.com/Jesus_Seminar/jesus_seminar.html
Also, to learn more about what non-religious unbiased
historians think about Jesus and the Gospels, check out the PBS Frontline
series on Jesus website at: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/religion/ You can check your local
library to see if they carry their excellent video series From Jesus to
Christ: The First Christians.
